Jazz

A jazz routine should consist of 95% jazz technique. A maximum of 2 gymnastics/acro moves excluding splits. (Routines consisting of more than 2 gymnastics/acro skills should be entered in the Acro category) Theme based dances are included but must still meet technical requirements.


Lyrical

A lyrical dance must portray strong emotions containing a combination of ballet and jazz with an emphasis on ballet technique.


Contemporary

A contemporary dance draws on modern dance techniques as well as newer philosophies of movement that depart from classical dance techniques and may omit structured form & movement to portray a mood or fulfill an idea with or without music.


Tap

A tap routine should consist of 95% tap technique. Tap sounds must not be pre-recorded with music. Theme based dances are included but must still meet the technical requirements.


Song & Dance

Any style/technique or era of dance that portrays a character, tells a story and includes vocals & singing by the performer. No pre-recorded lyrics/vocals for soloists. Pre-recorded lyrics/vocals are permitted for groups only.


Variety

Includes song & dance solos with pre-recorded vocals, lip syncing, dramatization, stage etc. A number participating in this must be 80% dance and unsuitable for any other category.


Classical Ballet

A routine strictly based on classical steps and technique. Correct footwear should be worn. (Ballet slippers)


Character Ballet

A routine consisting of ballet steps and technique. The dance has to tell a story or have a definite theme throughout. Correct footwear should be worn according to the character.


Pointe

A routine where 50% or more of the dancers are performing on pointe or 50% or more of the routine is performed on pointe. The level of training is to be calculated using ballet years of training not just pointe training.


Acro

A routine using acrobatic movement/gymnastics/tumbling techniques combined with dance skills. Movements or ‘tricks’ are considered to be any skill in which a dancer completes a 360 degree rotation where both feet are above their head. (Examples; front & back roll, cartwheel, aerial, handstand, handspring, elbow stand, limbers)


Hip Hop

Hip Hop routines must consist of street dance and hip hop techniques. Appropriate music (lyrics) must also be considered.


Production

A production is any type of dance with 20 or more people and must be between 5-10 minutes. There must be some change in routine.


STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY SOLO

Choreography by the student performing. Dancer/student must not have received any assistance from another dancer/student, teacher or choreographer. Solo must be 100% choreographed by the performer & must be original choreography. Solo must nt be adopted from any social media source.

There is NO competing against one self (same age, same category)

A dancer is not required to be entered n a group in order to do a solo. A dancer may enter as many solos as they wish as long as they do not compete against themselves.
